Fidya

Making Up Missed Fasts with Compassion

Fidya is a charitable compensation for those who are unable to fast during Ramadan due to chronic illness, old age, or other long-term conditions that prevent them from making up the fasts later. In such cases, a person should feed a poor individual for each day of fasting missed.

Allah (SWT) says in the Qur’an:

“But if any of you is ill or on a journey, the same number (should be made up) from other days. And as for those who can fast with difficulty, they have (a choice either to fast or) to feed a poor person (for every day).”
– Surah Al-Baqarah (2:184)

This verse highlights the mercy and flexibility within Islam when it comes to acts of worship. Fidya allows those unable to fast to still fulfill their duty and earn reward by helping those in need. The amount should be sufficient to cover the cost of a nutritious meal for each missed day of fasting.

By giving Fidya, you uphold your faith and extend compassion to the less fortunate, ensuring they too can enjoy nourishment and support during the sacred month.

“And whatever good you spend is for yourselves, and you do not spend except seeking the countenance of Allah. And whatever you spend of good – it will be fully repaid to you, and you will not be wronged.”
– Surah Al-Baqarah (2:272)
